Giving at GMS
The Gloucester Montessori School is a non-profit 501(c)(3)
educational institution and relies greatly on close school,
parent and community collaboration and involvement to
allow us to continue our tradition of providing a quality
independent educational alternative to the Gloucester and
Middle Peninsula area.
Parental Involvement -
Teaching children effectively requires a close collaboration
between parents and teachers. Research confirms a direct
link between student success and parental involvement with
the school.
At GMS, parent involvement is critical to all our success –
and a fine demonstration of leading by example for our
children. Please consult the GMS Parent Handbook for more
information on expectations of students, parents and school
for a mutually effective relationship.
GMS offers several opportunities throughout the year for
parent education, with sessions to help parents understand
what their children are experiencing in the classroom and
how Montessori principles may be applied in the home.
In addition, parent-teacher conferences and observations are a great way to further inform and
educate parents about the Montessori experience. There are also several enjoyable social events
throughout the year to bring the school community together.

Family Service Hours -
To help the school carry out its programs and services, each family is expected to contribute
15 service hours per enrolled student a year. There are many options and opportunities for
fulfilling service hours, including garden maintenance, classroom and/or field trip assistance,
service on committees, and participation in fundraisers and community events.
Fundraising -
Our annual fundraising plays a vital part in the day-to-day operations of our school.
We raise money to supplement tuition income and help us invest in program enhancements,
teacher development and renovations. Our goal is to keep Gloucester Montessori
programs and facilities fresh and innovative, and our teachers challenged and excited.
Fundraising takes each family’s participation. Our small community of parents, faculty, staff,
Board of Directors, alumni, and friends can make a substantial difference in the lives of our
children and future generations of Montessori children.
Our annual spring Not Just Desserts fundraising event is our largest fundraising activity.
Participation from local restaurants and businesses ensure a fun-filled evening, including
live music, auction, and lots of great food. This event is entirely organized by parents and is
a fun way to work towards service hours and work with other parents.
There are many ways to support the school financially, including stock transfers or cash,
real estate or planned gifts. Please contact the school at (804) 693-6455 for more information.

What's happening at GMS:
Children's House I:
We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our caterpillars - they are due any day now and we will begin our observance of the process of metamorphosis. We are continuing to learn about the different groups of invertebrates, thanks to Dylan for bringing in jellyfish, a crab and a shrimp (all living) for us to study. We will focus on insects later this month, we have only to go as far as the playground for first-hand observation. With luck, we will end the year with a bang as the caterpillars change into butterflies that we will release outside, perhaps to see fluttering around the children's garden this summer!

Children's House II:
As the class slips into the final phase of the school year, it is so rewarding to watch the children work together and see how they have grown on so many levels. This is my thank you note to you for the joy of working with your children. Best wishes to our kidergarten graduates, Jake, Cooper and Elliott. Thanks to the LaCasse family for the wonderful CD and thanks again to Chip & Stephanie Davis for our beautiful bathroom renovation and painting the walls.

Elementary:
Both classes are preparing for a trip to Assateague island. Students will fish, swim, and cook on this group camping trip. We are studying the evolution of humans which will culminate in Cro-Magnon Day on June 8th. On Cro-magnon day we celebrate our ancestors with cave painting, food gathering, fire-making, and atl-atl throwing. Students will have a test on the Animal Kingdom on Friday, May 14th. Students are almost finished with their Mammal order habitats paintings. Upper elementary students will finish their research papers on early humans. They will study measurements, and also review area and volumes of geometric figures. Lower elementary will finish studying the atmosphere with the presentations of their research papers on weather. They will make a hot air balloon together.
